FILM REVIEW: SUPERMAN DOOMSDAY

The new era of DC Animation begins with a insanely long line. I mean damn, what a line! I hate lines but I love Superman so I grin and bear it (as do several thousand others).

As you know this story is based off the 90's story line, The Death of Superman. It was a big huge event that made all the news to the point where every big comic death is compared to it (justly or unjustly). This is not an exact port over from the comics which is fine with me since the "Death" story line could use the some tweaking and in animated form where they only have 75 minutes to make a solid story so you can't fully and realistically expect all that to be shoe-horned in this movie.

It took a second to get used to this new, non-JLU Superman. he's not a part of any league (according to Bruce Timm in the post movie panel, Superman is the only Super hero out there) Pa Kent is dead and Lois Lane doesn't know Clark Kent and Superman are one in the same - yet she'd been dating Superman for six months, and most of Metropolis seems to know (thanks to the tabloids). Like I said, a different but not unfamiliar Superman in a different setting. Adam Baldwin does a very good job as Superman. He's probably the best I've ever heard animation wise (Tim Daly is a bit too stiff for me and George Newburn, while good is missing that authoritative presence that I think Superman has). Bruce Timm mentioned in an interview that Baldwin's Superman is the one he's been looking for since the mid-90's when he first worked on Superman: The Animated Series. When Baldwin's Superman says "I'll taker care of it.", you believe him.

Some may have a problem with Superman's facial design because of his cheek bones. I personally don't as it reminds me of the way Walt Simonson would draw Superman but hey, to each his or her own.

Lois Lane (Anne Heche) is bright, daring and independent. Not much different from the Dana Delany Timm-verse Lois. While happy in her relationship with Superman she is frustrated with the fact that she doesn't know much about him and after six months she feels she's entitled to know more. Heche did a great Lois and I thought she would have been the best ever if not for her crying scene. That scene didn't come off very well. In fact the audience was mocking her attempt at grief when Superman laid dead in front of her. She's great at everything else however. Lois is tough and very brave (the AC/DC opus "She's got balls" comes immediately to mind). I wouldn't mind seeing more of this Lois Lane in the future.

Lex Luthor (James Marsters) in this movie is a JOY to behold. While Clancy Brown has become for me, the definitive Lex Luthor, Marsters does a fine Lex and easily carves his own niche in that role. Again Lex in this one is a high -rolling business mogul who's vindictive, slimy, disingenuous and dare I say he's got a "thing" for Superman. This Lex is more obsessed with Superman more than any other screen version I've seen. Freud would have a field day with this Lex as there is a lot to take in with Lex's personality. Regardless of how you want to interpret his character it can't be denied that his presence commands attention. He chews up scenery but is far from camp and this Lex takes full advantage of the movie's PG-13 rating.

The other title character Doomsday is walking death. That's it, nothing more really needs to be said. He kills everything in his path. Civilians, soldiers, animals (Bambi no!), Kryptonians - all dead. This OVA Doomsday is different from the JLU version we've seen. The movie Doomsday is of an alien origin while the JLU one is a Cadmus creation. There are some little things that I won't include about him but all you need to know is that he exists to kill everything.

The actual fight between Superman/Doomsday is probably the best U.S. animated fight scene I've seen. America has come along way when it comes to animation and I think they've turned a corner with Superman/Doomsday. It was fast, brutal, bloody, destructive and every blow felt as if it hurt. It's what you'd want and expect to see in a fight between these two titans and in my opinion the fight succeeds with flying colors.

Outside of Lex there was one other character that was really... really fun to watch.

BIG SPOILER BELOW

LAST CHANCE!

The "Dark" Superman is a riot. He blends in a couple of the origins from "Reign of the Supermen" storyline (I won't say which but you'll be able to figure it out when you see it). He's compassionate yet as the story develops has a harsh sense of Justice. He's blunt, brutal, murderous (!), a bit arrogant and intelligent. Why? Because he's the Goddamn Superman that's why!

Oh yeah, it's like that (keep an eye out for a scene where Dark Superman rescues an old lady's kitty from a tree. It's awesomely creepy)

Normally I would spill some more plot intensive beans but I'll pull back on this one. The joy is in seeing it for yourself and trust me, you'll thank me later.

However I would like to wrap this up by saying that DC's new direct to video, Warner Premier animation line has gotten off to a great start in Superman/Doomsday. DC's President & Publisher Paul Levitz said at the premier that they (WB/DC) are very proud of this movie and they should be.I always wondered to myself how, "How can they top JLU?" Well, this line is what could top it and it looks like they eventually will.

Oh. One more thing.

Ever hear of a little diddy called New Frontier? Yeah that's next and the trailer for it knocks it out of the park!

SDCC 2007: Yeah, We're Going....

I think it was the Governor of California that said, "I need a vacation." and I plan on doing just that... at SDCC. We at Henshinhobby.com plan on geeking out, eating good food and spending money (hey no one ever said "Walking the Path of Toy" was going to be a cheap thing) in San Diego. So we'll be gone for a bit and we will hopefully have a nice haul from SDCC.

Expect some kind of update this coming Monday.

MEDICOM News: Kamen Rider 仮面ライダーTHE NEXT

THANK GOD!

As some of you may or may not know, I'm a huge fan the Kamen Rider the First Medicom. Enough of one to proclaim it to be my one-sixth of 2006. Well as soon as I saw movie images of Kamen RIder the Next I knew a new Project BM! Rider wouldn't be far behind. We've seen show pictures of them but now Medicom has shown us clear product shots.

No big surprise over what's being shown here. he looks a little different as this is the Sakurajima version which is a version that the older, Kamen Rider show had (to see an image of what the old show's version of Sakurajima, visit a site friend of ours, Hockstuffs cool guy with great taste in one-sixth).

I love wear and tear the helmet has, the darker colors, the red segmented eyes. Literally I need to get two of these. No way around it (just in case you know... there's a out of control grease fire or kaiju attack. It happens.).

MEDICOM News: Overrated Character Causes Chaos in Fandom!!!

Well this isn't exactly breaking news but we do have new images of everyones favorite overrated Sith, Darth Maul (images below). We all knew that this Medicom would fan the flames of the non-existent war between Medicom and Sideshow. Non-existent because U.S. wise, they're both in bed together. After all, they both make each other money and there is nothing wrong with that. Lots of images and arguing over likeness, posability, price - the usual things people complain about on U.S. forums.

Personally I don't care about Maul at all. I have a Sideshow Maul just for trading purposes and I don't care about the Medi Maul either (superior or not, I don't care). If one of us here at HH decide to grab the Medi Maul I'm pretty sure you can expect a side by side comparison between them like what we did for the Superman one-sixth last year.

Until then, I'll keep my hopes up that Medicom or SST will do a Count Dooku (C'mon it's Christopher Lee. I don't really need to go into it any further do I?)

Bruce Lee (李小龍) passed away.

My feelings feelings for Bruce are pretty well known. Heck, we have a category of just Bruce Lee on the right hand side. To keep it brief Bruce had a profound impact on my life. My Bruce Medicom review sums it up decently so I won't go into it again. However it would be a great time to reflect on his words (or you can pop-in a movie of his whichever you prefer. We all reflect in our own way).

Bruce had many quotes but this one is my favorite:

"the word 'superstar' really turns me off, and I'll tell you why because the word 'star', man.. is an illusion. It's something what the public call you."

Yep dude got it, that's why he was awesome.

Anyway other than being the cause of many, many nunchaku accidents all over the world, his influence is being felt to this very day whether its in movies or the booming popularity of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts). Bruce left a huge impact on around the world, without a doubt.

Below is a nice little gem of a clip. It's the "lost" interview of Bruce Lee. A must see for every Bruce fan.

Anyway, it's Friday night in July, get out of here and enjoy the summer. I'm sure Bruce would have wanted it that way (and who am I to question him?)

Medicom News: MASTER ASIA!!! TOHOFUHAI!!! UNDEFEATED OF THE EAST IS HERE!!!!

Psych!!!

Psych! Psych! Psych!

Yeah I know, you hate me.

I did this because I was going through my old files and ran into this image which I guess came from Wonder Fest show. My computer says I saved this image back in 2002 so it obviously ain't new. I'm not a huge, huge Gundam fan, I just don't really pay that much attention to it. Sure 08th MS and G Gundam are awesome but I don't go out of my way to see other shows (and I have seen other shows, just not pressed about it). But as previously stated I really think G Gundam is absolutely awesome. It's one of the few shows whose set-ups actually pay off. It was excellent and exciting and dramatic, I even shed a tear or two (shut it). Sadly there's no one-sixth for it (there are lots of figures of the mobile suits but nothing of the humans, which for me is even more important).

Before I go even more off track with my gushing over G Gundam I wanted to show the pic below. Recognize it? That's the death scene of Master Asia - with Domon at his side, an incredible scene. I’m sure this was a fan made custom but man what I wouldn’t give to have this set in my overcrowded showcase. Needless to say this belongs in the “Should exist but doesn’t” category.

Who knows? Maybe with BM (Bandai/Medicom) we can finally get some G Gundam one-sixth love.

Maybe.

Until then, feast your eyes below on what could have been.

Posters: Flash Point and Invisible Target

In the category of "cool stuff you should look forward to" I give you these. I posted Donnie Yen's FLASH POINT trailer and so here's the poster. I'm a huge fan of his work and his movie looks very brutal and vicious. Good. Expect to see Flash Point hit theaters in HK August 3rd.

Then we have Invisible Target which only really has my interest because it has Wu Jing. Not much of a reason I know but the dude is crazy good on screen and after seeing him in Sha Po Lang and Fatal Contact I can't help but be a fan. While Nicholas Tse is the star of the movie, I'm seeing it for Wu Jing (Tse's cool to. Gotta give the man props for doing his own stunts).

Invisible Target is in theaters... NOW (in Hong Kong).

Transformers: The Truth the Eyes Have Met Before

In all honesty, few in their time can say they were are hard-core Transfans as I was. It was the first line I really collected. My tastes have changed a lot since then, but Transformers still has some leftover draw in me. This summer I’ve been anticipating a lot of movies, and I have no doubt where I’d be when Transformers premiered on July 2nd. I saw it twice, on the second and again on the third, and I can safely saw I enjoyed it. I wish there were nicer toys to buy, as is I’ve really just bought the big Prime and Megatron out of obligation. As for the movie, here’s my critique (which assumes you’ve seen the movie):

It is the year 2007. The treacherous Decepticons have conquered the Autobot’s home planet of Cybertron. Not too hard since there seem to be roughly five Autobots total, but hey . . .
Much of the first half of the movie is focused on Sam (Spike) Witwicky and his first car, The Autobot hero Bumblebee. It’s mostly comic relief with Bumblebee helping Sam hook up with fanboy-dream girl Mikaela, but obviously they’re trying to build the relationship between the two. The drama aspect is a bit slow for an action movie, but there is a lot to set up for the uninitiated. Soon the rest of the Autobots arrive, and the real action beings. About forty-five minutes later. I don’t have much more to say on the first half of the movie. It’s good, but there’s not much worth talking about.
So first comes a pretty ridiculous scene with Sam searching his room for the glasses which hold the map to the Allspark, with the Autobots pressuring him outside and trying to hide from his parents. The scene pretty much shows that these ‘warriors’ have no concept of stealth, or patience for that matter. Seriously, if you’ve spent millennia looking for the Allspark (which you yourself shot into space) what’s fifteen minutes to let a fleshy search his room? And are the Witwicky’s neighbors all blind and deaf? And then enters the FBI. I mean the CIA. I mean the court jesters. Seriously, the worst excuse for government agents ever blunder in. Personal politics aside, between these Area 51 losers and the comical Sec of Defense, could we find one more opportunity to bash the Bush Administration? Oh yeah, I forgot about the Ding-Dongs on Air Force One. So Sam gets taken into custody, which invariably involves being given a grand tour of the most super-secret military base on Earth, along with random Army guys 1-5, that useless Austrailian chick and her personal ‘Token.’ God bless national security. They find out the the base houses both the frozen Megatron and the Allspark itself. Meanwhile the Autobots use the map on the glasses and head towards the base themselves. Thanks to their spy Frenzy the Decepticsons find this out too and rally for the battle to follow. Meanwhile inside the base Frenzy proceeds to begin to thaw out Megatron, which Sam dolefully informs everyone is their signal to leave. With two opposing groups of warrior super robots barring down on them and the Harbinger of Death well into the defrost cycle, the military guys make what I think to be one of the most retarded strategic decisions in the history of retarded strategic decisions: instead of having the fight in the middle of desert, they elect to move the Allspark (and the fight with it) to the middle of a major urban area! I’m sorry I need a moment.

.

.

.

Okay, I’m good now. The reason is simple: how can a movie fight be cool without massive collateral damage? And I will say the fight that follows is very cool. This is what the audience came for and it was not disappointing. Massive destruction and chaos ensue, as it should in all good action movies. I can’t complain they cheaped out on the fight, since the budget of each frame of film could easily pay for my higher education. However, they very obviously tried to limit the use of the computer models, with their millions of components each, but having the individual scenes of the fight remarkably small scale. You have Ironhide and Ratchet team up, spend some time with Brawl, flash over to Starscream strafing for a while, then off to Bumblebee with the kids, then back to Brawl. All this creates a very disconnected battle scene, and you’re often left wondering where one Decepticon is when we focus on another. It seems like they’re nice enough to wait and fight the Autobots and the humans one at a time. And it seems Barricade took a wrong off-ramp because he’s totally absent. Meanwhile Megatron shows up and proceeds to tear Jazz a new one. Or two. This is how Megatron should be: the God of Destruction to the average Autobot. Prime shows up and the real fight begins. I’ll admit my latent Transfan blood stirred when Prime told Megatron “One shall stand, one shall fall.” Pity they didn’t follow it up with the rest of the dialogue. Then Megatron proceeds to thoroughly and complete own Prime. I have no problem with this. Again, I like my Megatrons more powerful than their Prime; it sets up for very desperate situations, as it did here. I did find the conversation between them very odd, as Prime and Megatron debate whether the humans deserve protection. Prime I understand, but to Megatron this is like having a debate about the poor little ants on the battlefield getting all stepped on. They are so beneath him as to not even be a concern. He’s just there for the Allspark. So anyways just as all seems lost, a new power comes to light their darkest hour.

The US Air Force. With their missles.

No. No no no no no no no no. No. There is no way the Military should be able to hurt him this badly, not after Prime got his skidplate handed to him. The same goes for the others, especially Blackout. “The weakspot’s behind the chest???” So not only do these Transformers have armor weak enough to be breached by thermal hand grenade launchers, but they also have their Sparks right in the center of their chests?! No wonder there are only a handful left on each side, they must fall like matchsticks during battles. One guy on a bike should not be able to deliver a fatal shot to a Decepticon warrior.
Prime ultimately decides to make the ultimate sacrifice, but Sam quickly decides that Megatron should instead and sticks the Allspark right into Megatron’s spark. And turns him into Galvatron.
Seriously I so wish that was what happened. But really the most powerful evil robot in the galaxy crumples like a tin can in a terribly anti-climatic ending. Good wins. Evil loses. The dork gets the girl. Bumblebee’s voice box magically grows back. Somehow the US government covers up the existence of the Transformers, including the battle between a dozen of them that destroyed a major city center in plain sight. Yay! And Prime calls out to the stars:
“Join us. Join us for Transformers 2”
And they will come. And so will I.

I actually liked that movie). Needless to say when a better version of this trailer gets released I'll post it here. Anyway, Enjoy!

MEDICOM News: Kamen Rider DX, Old No. 1 Version 3.0!!!

That was a long title wasn't it? Couldn't even fit a decent pun in. Remember what I said about Medicom constantly improving themselves with my RH220 X Rider update? This new one falls into that category as well. Check out the image below. This one is RAH 349, Kamen Rider old number 1 version 3.0 and it's even more accurate to the original Rider suit than prior releases.

I know what your thinking, "The mouthpiece looks crooked"

To that I say yes, it is and that's how it was like in the show. Little things like that were actually part of the shows charm. You can actually see a part of Hongo's mouth through said crooked mouthpiece, which again is just like the show.

The belt is made of leather. That's worth noting since the belt in prior releases have been made of plastic. Add to that the new crossed-hands and you have a very appealing 3.0 Rider. Also below is a scanned image from the good people at www.Toyskingdom.com.hk gives you a good image breakdown between the three versions of old number one.

Needless to say this will be on our site in review and gallery form as soon as we can get our grubby hands on it.

Retail is 17,640 Yen and the release date is January '08.
