For the longest time, the special effects for live action Japanese genre movies have been notoriously known for having horrid effects. Now thanks to the commonality of CGI the technology has finally caught up to the imagination of Japanese film makers. No matter how serious (SHINOBI: Heart Under Blade) or wacky (Cromartie High) the idea the option is now there. Now out of the blue is a rather surprising but unsurprising manga adapted live action movie: SLAM DUNK! Yep, Slam Dunk.
Like I said it’s surprising but unsurprising at the same time. It’s probably a smart move. Basketball is probably the number two sport in the world behind futbol (soccer) and it’s a game that has become more and more embraced and participated by the international community to the point where the US men’s national and Olympic teams have been no longer dominate the sport. In fact, they sometimes lose. While I could right an opus as to why the US men’s basketball players make more money combined than certain countries yet lose to said I countries, I’d rather talk about SALM DUNK! This 90’s series was very popular, not just in Japan but throughout Asia. I could understand when Hong Kong decided to make an Initial D movie. It’s very popular and still very active. SLAM DUNK however is far from new. But under the current climate of international basketball I guess now is as good a time as any to give the public a SLAM DUNK live action movie.
According to Variety the cast is as follows:
Cast is headed by Taiwanese pop and "Curse" star Jay Chou, alongside Charlene Choi ("Twins Effect") and Chen Bo-lin ("A Chinese Tall Story"). Yee Chung Man, nominated for an Oscar for her costume design of "Curse," is pegged as art director, while Tony Ching Siu Tung, action director on "Curse" and "House of Flying Daggers," and "Curse" cinematographer Zhao Xiao Ding reprise those roles.
interesting huh? Guess we’ll have to wait and see. For those who don’t know what SD and haven’t seen the show and or mange just check out the incredibly 90’s looking opening clip below.
